Obesity:
Obesity is a severe problem facing many people worldwide and it is a chronic condition that is very difficult to treat. Everybody whose BMI ( Body Mass Index ) is more than 40, trying to lose weight as overweight leads to many health disorders. Many conventional procedures are being followed to reduce the weight. These conventional methods may not work for the persons having BMI is more than 40. In such cases, alternate methods like weight loss surgery are preferred. Before knowing about weight loss surgery, it is necessary to know the normal digestive system.
Digestive System:
After we consume food, it moves down to the stomach, where a concentrated acid helps the digestive process. In the process of digestion, the content in the stomach moves to the first segment of small intestine, where bile and pancreatic juices speedup the digestion. Maximum quantity of iron and calcium, we eat is absorbed in the first segment of small intestine. Other two segments of small intestine completes the absorption of all calories and nutrients. The food content which cannot be digested in the small intestine are stored in the large intestine and eliminated.
What is weight loss surgery:
In the weight loss surgery, some portion of stomach or small intestine is removed, so that the intake of food can be limited or absorption of calories and nutrients are limited.
Types of weight loss surgeries:
1. Restrictive surgery : In the restrictive surgery, a small section of stomach is removed, limiting the capacity of the stomach. Due to which, food holding capacity of stomach reduced and causes you to feel ful
2. Malabsorptive surgery : In the malabsorptive surgery, small intestine is involved as the process of digestion of food and absorption of calories and nutrients takes place in the small intestine . In this surgery some portion of small intestine will be removed i.e shorten the length of small intestine. By doing so, the digestion of food or absorption of calories and nutrients will be limited
Generally any one of the above surgeries or both will be done for losing weight.
With the above surgeries, you will lose weight, since less food goes into the stomach and stays in the small intestine.
Weight loss surgeries are having advantages and disadvantages also. Since it has risk factors, one should think seriously before undergoing surgery.
