Diabetic Foot Care
By >> L. Schneider

The cases of diabetes are increasing every day in the US and the trend seems to be accelerating. As more and more people develop this terrible disease the care of diabetic symptoms gets to be a bigger issue. One major concern of people with diabetes is foot pain and how to care for their feet. Over 70% of foot amputations in the US are directly related to diabetes causes, but you can do things to help ward of this result.

Diabetes tends to slow the normal circulation of blood in the extremities and in particular the feet. This pooling of fluids causes swelling and can be very painful. It also means the foot is not able to heal itself as well as it could before the onset of the disease. Thus foot care is a very important issue for diabetics.
The most important thing you can do is to inspect your feet every day for signs of blisters or other sores. Diabetes neuropathy, or nerve damage, often times makes it difficult to feel an injury to the feet. Leaving these small sores and not treating them can quickly cause major problems if they get infected. Again the bodies natural anti-infection agents do not work as well when a person is suffering from the disease and thus what would normally only be a small irritation can quickly turn into an issue that may result in amputation. Spotting problems early allows for an easy treatment of the sores.
It is also important to protect the feet as well as possible. Diabetic shoes are specially designed to give added support and protection against injury. They also are designed to allow the normal build up of moisture on the feet to be dissipated which helps in blister control. These shoes are constructed with a larger than normal toe area to stop further constriction of the blood flow and they can be found in widths up to 4E to allow for the natural swelling during the day.

Along with diabetic shoes another foot care item is diabetic socks. These socks help with moisture control and they are constructed to relieve irritation and pain. The socks are specially manufactured to not have a seam and the tops are looser than normal so as to not constrict at the ankle.
If you or someone you know has diabetes you need to start on a diabetes foot care program today. People have lived for years without major problems with their feet if they take care of them. You can find out more about diabetic foot treatment today.
