Type 2 Diabetes - Infertility And Diabetes: Is There A Connection?

Saturday, June 13, 2015

When a woman decides that she wants to have a baby, it can be a very exciting time. However, for a woman who is diabetic, be it Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, having a child can present certain challenges that other women don't have to consider. Diabetes can cause problems with fertility that need to be treated early so that a woman can best preserve her ability to have a family.
Infertility is classified as the inability to become pregnant after trying to conceive for 12 months. About 10% of the population is believed to have infertility problems.

Metformin: A Beginner's Guide

Sunday, March 17, 2013

By >> Guin Van Niekerk

For centuries people have used French Lilac (Galega officinalis) to treat the symptoms of diabetes mellitus. But it was only in the last century that the active ingredient was isolated and identified. This compound, a single guanidine ring, while itself being too toxic to be used in the long term management of diabetes, led to the development of one of the safest and most widely used of all the antidiabetic medications: metformin.

Learn About the Signs of Diabetes in Women

Sunday, March 3, 2013

By >> Sara Morrison

The signs of diabetes in women are not that different than those noticed in men but there are some differences that we need to take into account. The truth is that most people that have diabetes are women and in most cases they are obese. In the event that your diet is filled with fat instead of good carbohydrates and the fiber content is low, you are more likely to end up facing this disease. The good news is that you can avoid this by simply changing your diet and making it proper. However, type 2 diabetes can also appear because of genetic reasons. Please keep in mind that the term 'obese' actually means a weight that is at least twenty percent over the regular weight that you should have. In the event that you are obese, live a sedentary life and are over 45 the risks of developing type 2 diabetes are really high.

Diabetes Symptoms in Women

By >> Jacky Smith

There is no reason to get scared if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Especially, women are termed as' weak and scary' by the society. Whereas, I believe women are much stronger and sensible mentally. Even though, a diabetic life is bit difficult to maintain, it is overall a good life. We just need to have patience and get our treatment started as soon as possible. And all this is not possible unless we do not get proper diagnoses of our problem.
If diabetes is diagnosed at early stage, we can definitely avoid the severe intensity of diabetes. Due to the hectic lifestyle, diabetes has become a common illness in the modern world.

Signs And Symptoms of Diabetes - Beware - There May Not Be Any!

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Every week I diagnose people with diabetes who have likely had it for 5 years or more and yet had no idea what was happening to them! They may already have complications like eye disease or nerve damage from high sugars but are always surprised that they did not notice any symptoms. Typically, people hear that the signs of diabetes are feeling thirsty and going to the bathroom a lot. This certainly can be true but people will only experience this if the sugars are high enough for the kidneys to spill sugar into the urine. Blood sugar levels can be high enough to cause damage to the body, yet low enough that the individual has no symptoms at all in the range of 8-15 mmol/L

Diabetes Home Cures and Treatments

Doctors have been telling their patients that there is no cure for diabetes, they both right and wrong at the same time, they are right in the sense that diabetes cannot be cured by modern medicine all that modern medicine could come up with was insulin shots and that does not solve the problem, that's just a quick fix.

The Cause of Diabetes and How to Cure It

Saturday, November 17, 2012

On a physical level, diabetes is caused by a disturbance in our metabolism from lack of insulin secreted by the pancreas or as a result of our cells not responding to the insulin that is produced. It is said that around 85% of adults diagnosed with diabetes are overweight. On the surface level, there is no apparent explanation as to what causes this lack of insulin or why the cells do not respond to the insulin in some cases. Traditional medicine has a hard time identifying what causes dis-eases, and why some people get them and others don't.

Type 2 Diabetes - How To Lower Blood Sugar Naturally!

Blood sugar is not only important for diabetics, but it also comes in handy for those with a weight issue or if an individual is insulin resistant. Controlling blood sugar levels can work miracles not just for weight loss but also for avoiding the many complications of Type 2 diabetes. So knowing how to lower blood sugar is one thing: but knowing how to do it naturally and safely is completely different.
There are several ways to lower your blood sugar level naturally. Why would anyone need to do that? Because of the nature of diabetes. Food is broken down into glucose, which the body would normally use for fuel. But in order for this to happen as it is intended, the body also has to release insulin from the pancreas to help assist glucose in making its way into cells.

Diabetes: Helping Yourself Naturally Using the Glycemic Index

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

by >> Andrew Mason

Diabetes is one of our most devastating illnesses and we are waging a constant battle against its effects. In this battle, the glycemic index is an important tool. The index is based on a rating system allocated to a variety of different carbohydrates. Indeed, the index was developed with the plight of people who suffer from type II diabetes in mind. The plan enables those who suffer from this condition around the world to have a dietary option.

We need to manage the amount of carbohydrates that we eat, so that we measure our glycemic response in order to tackle this illness. We have to be able to control insulin and to regulate our blood glucose levels. This is a thorny problem, of course, but if we follow the readings of the glycemic index, the food category, the portion size and the way that we prepare our meals, we have a good chance of success.

The Dangers Of Diabetes For Women Who Are Pregnant

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

More women than ever before are carrying fetuses while they are diabetic. This can have an effect on the mom as well as the developmental process for the baby. Fortunately, modern medicine is doing all it can to make this process less difficult for diabetic women.
Why do some women, with no prior history of diabetes, develop diabetes over the course of their pregnancy? Known as gestational diabetes, this condition occurs in approximately two out of every 100 women who become pregnant. In a normal pregnancy process, the woman's placenta creates a variety of hormones to nourish the fetus and help it to grow and develop. Of these hormones, some of them have anti-insulin properties.

7 Mineral and Vitamin Supplements That Prevent Diabetes

Diabetes afflicts millions around the world - 24 million in 2008 in the United States. These numbers grow annually, but with the assistance of 7 mineral and vitamin supplements that prevent diabetes, onset of the condition can be delayed or prevented altogether.
This condition is found in children and adults worldwide. Diabetes causes the blood sugar level in the body to increase, which can only be controlled, as there is currently no cure. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1, which occurs when the body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin that enables the absorption of glucose by the body\'s cells, and Type 2, which is caused by the body\'s cells not using insulin properly, otherwise known as insulin resistance.

Vitamin D
One of several vitamins used in the prevention of diabetes is Vitamin D. A recent study at Massey University showed that higher than usual doses of this vitamin may increase insulin sensitivity. Because sunlight is the best source of this vitamin, a higher dose may be particularly useful to people living in colder climes or who do not get the opportunity to get out into the sunshine often.

Vitamin E and Magnesium
Vitamin E is believed to improve insulin activity, as is magnesium, making the insulin more effective and helping to regulate the level of blood sugar in the body. Biotin is one of the B vitamins that has been shown to increase the activity of the enzyme controlling the first stage in glucose utilization, called glucokinase.

Bitter Melon: Cheap Alternative Medicine for Type 2 Diabetes

One of the most recognizable symbols of Taiwan is the iconic half-kilometer tall Taipei 101 tower. Billed as the second highest man-made structure in the world, the skyscraper has been shown countless of times in television programs, discussed over the radio for how many umpteenth hours, and featured in numerous articles.

Yet Taipei is not just the 101 tower. The city also has other equally interesting facets: its culture, people, and food. When you talk about Taipei, you can't ignore the food. Taipei has been known for being a hub for those seeking exotic gastronomic treats, such as, rich and succulent steamed chicken feet, spicy balls of rooster's testicles, and deep fried bitter melons.

Haven't heard of bitter melons yet? Well, the name says it all: its wrinkled oblong-shaped fruit is one of the bitterest vegetables in the world. A native of the tropics, bitter melon (Momordica charantia), is commonly used in Asian cuisine for its unique bitter flavor. And Asians don't just love to eat it: they also love it because of its very efficacious medicinal properties.

The great ancient Chinese physician Li Shizen included bitter melon in his well known pharmaceutical text Compendium of Materia Medica (circa 1603) and listed the fruit as an effective remedy against extreme heat and fatigue. Indeed, it has been used by ancient Asian cultures other than the Chinese to relieve constipation and dyspepsia and to treat chronic conditions like diabetes. Then mainstream Western medicine came and overshadowed traditional Asian folk remedies.

Cinnamon Can Lower Blood Sugar And Aid In Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is when glucose is prevented from entering the cells of the body, particularly muscle, liver and fat cells. This causes high blood sugar levels to appear. Insulin is a facilitator for the transport of glucose though the cell walls. This role as a facilitator is a highly complex set of chemical reactions. The pancreas produces insulin in response to elevated blood glucose levels. Once it enters the blood it signals the body's cells to take up the excess glucose until normal blood glucose levels are then again achieved. In diabetics this highly complex set of chemical reactions is disrupted.

Insulin molecules bind to receptors on cell walls, this creates a tiny molecular "gateways" that opens up and allows glucose molecules to pass though. If this system is not functioning properly these gates will not respond correctly to the insulin signal and prevent glucose from entering the cell. When this happens the common tern is "insulin resistance". This problem is a common occurrence in people that have an obesity problem. When insulin resistance is present the levels of glucose in the blood remain abnormally high and can be very dangerous in the long run. The pancreas will attempt to compensate for this by making more insulin, but this only works for so long. The pancreas will eventually become overworked and starts to make less insulin. This is the time that things can go from bad to worse.
One of the more exciting medical discoveries regarding blood glucose levels happened at the USDA testing center in Maryland totally by accident. There scientists were looking at the affect that various foods have on blood sugar levels. They were very surprised to find that good old apple pie actually lowered the blood glucose levels of patients in their studies.
This promoted them to look at cinnamon and how it may fit into this observation.

Ezine and Web Articles | Normal Blood Sugar Levels What Are They?

Normal Blood Sugar Levels What Are They?

By >> Jo Trapp

The importance of normal blood sugar levels is related to the prevention of the complications of diabetes. If your blood sugar (glucose) level is not within the ideal or normal blood glucose range you can begin to experience short term and long term problems.

Short term problems include high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Long term problems include blindness, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, impotence, nerve disease and loss of limbs. Nerve disease can affect the feet and legs as numbness, pain or a burning, tingling sensation. Loss of limbs is the result when amputations are needed because of poor circulation, infection or nerve disease.

Normal blood sugar levels depend on when the test was taken. A fasting normal blood glucose level is taken from a person who has not eaten for 8 12 hours. A person who does not have diabetes will have a normal fasting blood glucose level somewhere between 70 and 100 mg/dL. The goal for people with diabetes for a fasting blood glucose level is less than 110 mg/dL or in some cases 120 mg/dL. This is also the goal for normal blood sugar levels just prior to meals.
Blood sugar levels after meals, specifically 2 hours after one starts eating (2 hour postprandial blood glucose level), are less than 140 mg/dL in a person who is not diabetic. Poorly controlled diabetics will often have higher 2 hour postprandial (after meal) blood sugar levels depending upon how much carbohydrate they have consumed, how much insulin they are producing and how responsive their insulin is to the carbohydrate consumed.

Diabetes Type 1: What Everyone Needs to Know

Diabetes exists in two forms-type 1 and type 2. Approximately 95% of people suffering from diabetes have type 2, while only 5% of Americans suffer from type 1. Though type 2, sometimes referred to as adult on-set diabetes, is more prevalent, type 1, otherwise known as "juvenile" diabetes, is often considered the more serious of the two. Type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children; however, it is possible to be diagnosed in adulthood. When the body ingests food, the stomach begins to break down its contents into protein, fat, and carbohydrates. It is carbohydrates that further break down into glucose, which the body uses for energy. In a normal, healthy body, the pancreas releases a hormone called insulin, which helps the cells absorb and use the glucose. The insulin acts as a key to the cell, so that when it is released, it opens the cell allowing glucose to be absorbed. However, when insulin is absent, the cell cannot open and absorb the glucose from the bloodstream. A type 1 diabetic's pancreas does not function properly-it releases little to none of the hormone, insulin, as it should. Therefore, when glucose enters the bloodstream, it is forced to remain there because insulin is not present to open the cell for absorption.

Fact file for Diabetes

By >> Joslin Diabetes

Basic facts

Diabetes is among those diseases which work as a slow poison and very gradually taken over a person\'s life. It is one of the most wide spread diseases in the world. And it will be very shocking to know that one in four people in USA suffer from diabetes. Whether young or old, diabetes can entrap anybody. When your body is unable to utilize or break sugar and starch into energy it means that you are suffering from diabetes. The level of glucose in this disease goes high and then causes the sugar levels to rise in an individual\'s body. Diabetes is of three common pre-diabetes, type- type I, type II and gestational diabetes. It is spread among all the age group across the globe.
The next thing that one needs to understand is what work does the glucose do for our body? As we all know that all the food that we consume contains sugar, and the food is broken into a sugar known as glucose. This glucose helps us to produce energy for our daily activities. The glucose circulates in the body and is absorbed by blood cells which work as a fuel to develop energy. Insulin is a hormone that is secreted fro the pancreas in our body which pushes this glucose into body cells. And if there is a breakage in this natural process, then the sugar levels in our body starts rising.
Diabetes starts affecting the body slowly and gradually. Increased urination, weight loss, constant hunger, increased thirst and fatigue are some of the crucial symptoms of diabetes. If these symptoms are diagnosed well in time, then, one might be saved from its ill-effects. But if the disease is not diagnosed properly in the early stage, then, it can take a very bad shape. The initial stage of diabetes is pre-diabetes. During the pre-diabetic stage, there is either a shortage or excess of insulin in the body. People who show the symptoms of diabetes early can be treated well in time and can keep out of this lethal disease throughout their lives. But diagnosing diabetes in the early stages is not that easy. Many people show its symptoms very late. People who get diagnosed of pre-diabetes are very vulnerable, and need immediate changes in their lifestyles and eating habits to control this disease. A pre-diabetic individual can control this disorder by exercising regularly and taking a balanced and nutritious diet.
The basic forms of diabetes are type I and type II diabetes. In the type I diabetes, an individual\'s body does not produces enough insulin that is needed by the body. This form of diabetes can happen anytime in life but usually happens in the early stages of life. In type II diabetes, an individual\'s body becomes resistant to insulin. This type of diabetes usually happens in the mid-years of one\'s life and is the most common type among people around the world. Unhealthy diet, which is high in carbohydrates, lack of exercise, obesity and hereditary are the basic reasons of this type of diabetes.
So, this information will surely help you to keep a check on your lifestyle and stay away from this disease forever.

Facts And Treatments Regarding Diabetes

Diabetes is considered a serious affection due to its permanent existence, procedures and moreover the complications that involves. Even though many people all over the world suffer from diabetes, the specialists haven t discovered yet the real source of its occurance. It is very important to mention that people who suffer from diabetes should ask for medical help as soon as they notice changes in their body and unusual symptoms.

First of all, diabetes occurs when the beta cells in the pancreas which produce insulin are totally destroyed. As we know the food that we eat turns into glucose or sugar helping our body to use for energy. Once there aren' t beta cells to produce insulin in order to transfer the glucose in the cells, the sugar remains in the blood and because the body cannot use sugar, it is spilled over into the urine and lost. Much more, diabetes can lead to severe health complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, lower-extremity amputations and in many cases even death.

Secondly, people who notice certain symptoms which indicate the presence of diabetes should see a physician in order to receive a proper diagnosis. Some of the most common symptoms which indicate the presence of diabetes are: excessive hunger and thirst, frequent urination, dramatic weight loss, lack of energy, dry skin, wounds that heal very hard and even nausea and stomach pains, symptoms which usually occur in type 1 diabetes.

In addition to this, there are two types of diabetes which are quoted from the National Diabetes Fact Sheet: National estimates and general information on diabetes in the United States (Centers for Disease Control an Prevention. Atlanta, GA: US Department of Health and Human Services, 1997). Much more, type 1 diabetes tends to be more serious than type 2 diabetes and usually occurs during the childhood.

Type 1 diabetes also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or Juvenile-Onset diabetes, is a common disease in children and may account for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. The factors which cause type 1 diabetes aren t entirely known but it has been considered that genetic predisposition and environmental factors, such as viral infections might have an important influence. On the other hand, type 2 diabetes also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes. This type of diabetes may appear due to certain factors, such as older age, obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, family history of diabetes, physical inactivity, prior history of gestational diabetes and other factors. It has been considered that certain races and ethnicities, such as African Americans, American Indians, Latino Americans are more exposed to get type 2 diabetes than other people.

Gestional diabetes seem to occur in 2% to 5% of all pregnancies but the good thing is that usually disappears when the woman gives birth. Even though a woman who had suffered of gestional diabetes and healed when the pregnancy was over, might develop type 2 diabetes in the future.

Furthermore, there are other types of diabetes which may account for 1% to 2% of all known cases of diabetes and they occur from genetic syndromes, surgeries, drugs, malnutrition, infections and many other affections.

Medical treatments for diabetes are vital for the body and include important changes in the lifestyle. Diabetes treatments tend to advance in a short time and their role is to maintain blood glucose near normal levels at all times. For instance, type 1 diabetes, the most severe type requires a wide range of procedures. People who suffer from this type of diabetes need a special treatment which include: administration of insulin injections, home blood glucose testing several times a day, a certain, calculated diet and also planned physical exercises. Even though, type 2 diabetes is not so serious like type 1, it also requires a strict treatment which consists in special diets, physical activities, home blood glucose testing, oral medication and 40% of the cases require insulin injections.

The causes of type 1 diabetes are not entirely identified, it is believed that it occurs to genetics predisposition or certain viruses which destroy the beta cells in the pancreas. Some important factors which may develop type 2 diabetes are lack of activity and overweight.

In order to take care of the people who suffer from diabetes, the diabetes community offers, pursued by the US Departament of Health and Human Services offer three options: prevent diabetes, cure diabetes and moreover taking better care of people with diabetes to prevent dramatic complications. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is involved in the research of curing type 1 and type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focuses through their programmes on being sure that the proven science is put into daily practice for people with diabetes.

All in all, even though diabetes tends to be an incurable illness, the science try to discover and consequently to utilize in practice several methods to cure diabetes, such as pancreas transplantation, artificial pancreas development, islet cell transplantation and genetic manipulation. However, until these approaches become reality they need to pass through a serie of investigations like preventing immune rejection, finding an adequate number of insulin cells, keeping cells alive and many others.
